Oils

I finally gave in and tried out my water miscible oil paints, mostly because I was desperately in need of a distraction from day job issues and didn’t want to sit in front of the television. Success! I’m not giving up the television, but wasting time making bad art is such a satisfying way of spending time.

Did I like them? My initial impression is yes, very much so. It’s going to take some work to get to the point where I can paint something I’m interested in showing anyone but that’s ok. I did just enough in about an hour to start to understand just how different oils are and also enough to know that I want to explore oils more. But to do that properly, I need to set up a better working space, even if it’s small. I have a space picked out and now I just need to rearrange things and buy a few items to make it useable.

Once I have a space and some tools, then I just need to carve out a regular time in my schedule to practice. I’ve got a nice extended sketching time once a week (in addition to my shorter ad hoc session) and I think I need the same for painting. Still thinking about that one.

I make art, I fence, and I’m always in search of another great book to read. Life is good.
